I’m gonna preach for a second, just warning you all. 😆 Here it goes... In the photography industry, there has been a massive shift towards shooting film and also this new attitude that film reigns supreme and those who shoot film are the best of the best. And you know... I absolutely love film. I love shooting it. I often much prefer my work that’s shot on film over my digital even though I can edit my stuff about as close as it’ll ever get.
But I’m also really bothered by the snobbery that’s gone along with this whole shift. For a lot of reasons, but the primary one (aside from the fact that snobby attitudes just always bug me) is that your medium is never what makes you an artist. A good medium can absolutely improve (or at least significantly affect) the results you get - and film is that for a lot of photographers (myself included, at least when the light is amazing and the kids stay still). But that’s only if you’re going for a certain aesthetic anyway - and also shooting in prime conditions (because film doesn’t cut it in a lot of scenarios). What I think I’m getting at is this - because I feel like maybe someone needs to hear this: YOU are the artist, and whatever you’re using as your tool does not make you or break you. If you’ve started feeling that you need to be shooting film to be good or to be taken seriously, that’s baloney. On the other hand if you’re interested in something that’s a creative challenge and you love the look - go for it. But don’t ever let the tools you use (or any attitudes you may encounter) define you or determine how skilled you are, how creative you are, and how seriously you want to be taken. That’s all you, my friend - the camera in your hand is just a camera, and that’s the truth of it. Go make beautiful art using whatever you’re able to and whatever you enjoy using, industry trends be damned.
Whether you’re in CA or ID, stop whatever you’re doing and let me have your ear (eyes??) for a second because I’ve got good news for you! 😜

ID friends - I had good interest in the motherhood sessions I talked about potentially opening up so I will for SURE be offering them this spring and I’ll be emailing out details soon. Make sure you’re on my email list because it’s first come, first serve and spots for these are very limited! You, your babies, simple and sweet and full of snuggles for a quick (and super discounted) session in my home studio - you definitely don’t want to miss out! (Photo above is from my studio and I’ll be posting more as I announce details!) And CA friends - I am considering opening up one more spot for photos while I’m in the Bay Area in April. I told myself I booked enough, but I kiiiind of love this job and so I thought I’d see if there was any interest in one last opening for the evening of Saturday, April 13. If you’re interested, email me! My other spots went FAST so don’t delay! I’d love to make some magic in that golden CA sunshine. Or fog... because every single time I’ve visited the Bay Area it’s been covered in fog. 😂 But either way.... we’ll make magic! 😉
Even with a third day of weekending, I’m no more ready to start the week tomorrow. Anyone with me? 🙋🏼‍♀️ Dumb question though - everyone is with me unless you need your kids to go back to school. 🤪
I still can’t fathom why Instagram won’t let us post a full 4x6 ratio photo and I miss this mama’s pretty tiptoes on the dock, but I’m still in love with this photo and this scenery and the most magical light I’ve ever photographed in. Come summer, please feel free to invite me along on your lakeside vacations to photograph your families - because I’ll be there in a heartbeat. 😉
It’s my favorite guy’s birthday today and I’m not going to make everyone suffer through hearing all the reasons I love him, but there are a LOT. One of the biggest though, is that he’s always been my number one fan. Always. He believes in me and cheers me on continually, no matter how much I doubt myself. If it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t even have this business - and I mean that when I say it. He’s encouraged me to face my fears and put myself out there and do hard things, and that is one of the greatest gifts you can ever give your significant other - just believing in them. And actually one last thing before I try to stop being mushy for the general public who probably doesn’t want to hear it - this guy has faced a lot of really heavy, bad stuff this last year. We’ve had some serious trials come our way, things that we felt would make us collapse under the pressure. But watching the person you’ve built a family with get up everyday to face things they shouldn’t have to face because their family is relying on them is something that will, if nothing else, teach you both what love really is. It’s a choice day in and day out, and it’s even greater when it’s a hard choice. Love is a verb and it’s one that this man lives out daily. Happy birthday my love!
One decade ago he welcomed me into my 20s and we celebrated our first birthday/Valentine’s Day extravaganza (our birthdays are on either side of Valentine’s Day - though honestly we never come close to an extravaganza 😂). Yesterday he welcomed me into my 30s, and today we celebrate us and the family we’ve created, and tomorrow we celebrate him and the wonderful human that I found a decade ago. Every year these three days feel like we have to cram too much good into too short a time (and don’t forget Adelaide’s birthday was a few days ago!), but I love that we have this little holiday sandwich every year - and I may or may not still believe our birthdays were a legitimate sign we were meant to be together. 😂 I hope you all enjoy this day celebrating love - whether it’s with a significant other, or your children, or your friends and family. Love is something to celebrate for sure, and though romance is wonderful, it’s that lasting, faithful, self sacrificing love you find in all kinds of relationships in life that is the real deal. Happy day of love, friends! 💕
